About Chummys

Hi, I'm Hope.

Chummys started in my kitchen. My Nan taught me to bake, and for a long time it was just something I did for the people I love. Then a few friends asked if they could order some. Then their friends did.

Six years on, we're a team of about twenty at our bakery in the West Midlands, baking every box to order and posting it the same day so it lands the next. And this summer we opened our first front door: a little coffee shop on The Row in Droitwich.

Everything still gets made the way I made that first batch. Proper squares, not slabs. Seventy per cent dark chocolate. Nothing baked until someone has ordered it.

Chapter one · A recipeBefore 2020

It starts with a recipe.

Hope's nan taught her to bake, and the brownie came straight out of her notebook: seventy per cent dark chocolate, real butter, a crackly top and a middle that gives.

For years it was baked for the people she loved, and that was the whole business plan.

Everything still gets made the way I made that first batch.

Chapter two · A kitchen table2020

Then friends asked.

A few friends wanted a box. Then their friends did. The first orders were packed on the kitchen table, walked to the post office and sent with a handwritten note.

That year taught us the two rules we still keep: bake it for the day it lands, and never let a box leave without a card.

Chapter three · A unit in Brierley Hill2021 to today

The day a box has.

By 2021 the kitchen had run out of room. Chummys moved into a unit on the Enterprise Trading Estate in Brierley Hill, and the team grew to twenty. Every box still follows the same day.

Ovens on

The first trays go in before the estate wakes up. Batter is made in small batches from the notebook recipe, and never held over to the next day.

Squares, not slabs

Each brownie is baked as its own chunky square, so every one has crisp edges and a gooey middle. Nothing is cut from a slab.

Packed, and the card written

Your flavours go in the box in the order you chose them. The gift card is printed and tucked under the lid.

Out of the door

Order before noon and your box is on today's run. The trolley goes to the van, tracked all the way.

Somewhere between Penzance and Inverness, a box lands. That is the bit we do it for.

Chapter four · A front door29 June 2026

Our first front door.

Six years of posting boxes, and we had never handed one across a counter. So this summer we opened a little coffee shop on The Row in Droitwich: Allpress coffee, Peter Cooks pastries and the bakes you know from the boxes, to eat in or take away.
