The end of August brings all of us in the northern hemisphere the final, but arguably the best month of summer, with sunshine, warm weather, and lots of daylight for outdoor activities! The British summer can take us by surprise, so we must grab any chance we can to get out there and enjoy our beautiful cities, towns, villages and countryside, with friends and family or even on our own. Quoting author Henry James, “Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me, those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language”, this perfectly sums up this time of year, and why we should all get out there and enjoy it while it lasts.
Embrace the Outdoors!
Going for walks in any environment can be a great tool for our bodies and minds, taking the time to give our legs a stretch and our heads a break from everyday life. Walking through a city centre listening to your favourite songs and feeling that main character energy, or getting in touch with nature whilst walking through the rolling hills our picturesque countryside offers, this break from the indoors can work wonders for us. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzche wrote that “all truly great thoughts are conceived while walking”, giving insight into the freedom our minds get from experiencing any outdoor environment available to us.
Food in the Sun….Yes, Please!
Food can always be a great addition to any outdoor activity wherever we are! Whether that is stopping for a delicious lunch in the garden of a country pub, a coffee and a cake in a hidden city cafe, or a little homemade picnic in the local park. Eating outside allows us all to take in the world, away from the four walls of our homes or offices, and brings together all of our senses in the best way - through food! By taking the time to truly enjoy amazing company, warm summer days, and tasty delights, a combination of the best things in life happens creating amazing experiences and memories that will stay with you for a lifetime. So whether it’s a 99 flake sat in the sun, or a humble cheese sandwich taking cover in the shade of a tree, enjoy it because the little things in life live with us the longest.
Home is Where the Heart is
We all know that the perfect summer’s day can be unpredictable here, I remember eating ice cream in July hiding under an umbrella which I think we can all relate to!, so it’s understandable that on those sunny days, everyone gets out there to enjoy it. This can be overwhelming for some of us, and the thought places being too busy to relax in offers a challenge, even on the most beautiful August days, but don’t despair, you can enjoy this end of this season from much quieter places. Whether you have access to a garden or a quieter local park. Grilling some burgers on the BBQ in the garden and catching some rays with friends and family, watching a stunning sunset with a loved one, or diving headfirst into a novel can offer us all a welcome break from the busyness that comes with public places in the summer, whilst taking advantage of the weather it offers. Everyone can enjoy the outdoors no matter what you prefer, that’s the beauty of it!
